AmaZulu striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has scored 10 goals in 10 matches, but increased defensive attention is forcing him to adapt his game.

Zimbabwean striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2026/27 campaign with AmaZulu FC, but his impressive scoring record is now attracting increased attention from opposition defenders.

The Usuthu forward has reportedly scored 10 goals in 10 matches, establishing himself as one of the team’s most important attacking players.

However, Ngwenya believes his strong performances have changed the way rival teams approach matches against AmaZulu, forcing him to find new ways to get past defenders and continue finding the back of the net.

Speaking to SABC Sport, the Zimbabwean striker acknowledged that opponents are increasingly concentrating on stopping him, potentially creating opportunities for his teammates.

“Everyone is preparing for me but it’s gonna give others a chance to score because everyone is coming for me,” Ngwenya said.

His comments highlight a new challenge for the in-form striker: adapting his game as defenders become more familiar with his movements, positioning and finishing.

Ngwenya Looks for New Ways to Beat Defenders

Scoring regularly can transform a striker’s confidence, but it also makes them a priority for opposing teams.

Ngwenya is beginning to experience that reality as his performances continue to attract attention in the Premier Soccer League.

The forward admitted that he must develop alternative attacking approaches because defenders are studying how he scores and are working harder to restrict his opportunities.

“It’s a bit demanding now because I have to find another way to penetrate because everyone is looking for how I’m scoring, so I must find another way to score,” he added.

For AmaZulu, the challenge will be ensuring that opponents’ efforts to contain Ngwenya do not reduce the team’s overall attacking threat.

If defenders commit additional players to stopping the Zimbabwean, other Usuthu attackers could benefit from the extra space created elsewhere on the pitch.

That makes the team’s ability to share the attacking responsibility increasingly important as the season progresses.

Arthur Zwane Identifies Areas for Improvement

Despite Ngwenya’s impressive scoring statistics, AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane believes the striker still has aspects of his game to improve.

Ngwenya was unable to add to his tally when Usuthu defeated Kruger United 1-0 in the Carling Knockout competition at Mbombela Stadium.

Hendrick Ekstein scored the decisive penalty to send AmaZulu into the quarter-finals, while Ngwenya struggled to convert his opportunities.

Zwane pointed to two early chances that the striker failed to take, explaining that Ngwenya’s effectiveness can be influenced by whether he scores early in a match.

The coach also highlighted the importance of making better decisions when facing defenders, particularly when protecting possession and choosing which direction to move the ball.

“You can’t push the ball and expose your ball to the right when the defender is coming from the right side. Put it to your left and put your body across,” Zwane explained.

The advice reflects the technical details that can separate a promising striker from a consistently effective goalscorer.

With opponents paying closer attention to his movements, Ngwenya will need to combine his natural finishing ability with improved decision-making and greater variation in his attacking play.

Can Ngwenya Maintain His Impressive Scoring Form?

Ngwenya’s reported return of 10 goals in 10 matches has made him a major attacking asset for AmaZulu.

The challenge now is sustaining that productivity as teams develop strategies specifically designed to limit his influence.

His ability to adapt could prove crucial, particularly if opponents attempt to deny him space inside the penalty area or prevent him from receiving the ball in dangerous positions.

At the same time, AmaZulu could benefit from developing a more varied attacking approach that allows other forwards and midfielders to exploit the attention Ngwenya attracts.

Zwane’s guidance will be important as the striker works to refine his game and become more effective against increasingly organised defences.

For Ngwenya, the next stage of the season will be about more than maintaining his scoring statistics. It will also be a test of his versatility, composure and ability to help his team succeed when goals are harder to find.

Can Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continue scoring at his current rate despite the increased attention from defenders, or will AmaZulu need other players to step up?
