Former Kaizer Chiefs winger and outspoken football analyst Junior Khanye has praised Amakhosi’s capture of Langelihle Phili, but warns that the 21-year-old’s talent could be wasted if the club fails to surround him with proper creative service.
Phili joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC this week as the club’s fifth marquee signing of the window, following in the footsteps of defender Thabo Moloisane. However, Khanye believes Naturena still lacks a dedicated playmaker to unlock the young attacker’s full potential.
“You Can’t Eat Without the Ingredients”: Khanye’s Warning
Speaking on iDiski TV, Khanye emphasized that while Phili has the quality to shine at a big club, success in Johannesburg requires the right surrounding structure:
“He’s a player for a big team, and it’s been long coming… The boy worked for it and he has a bright future if he can remain humble when he arrives in Johannesburg because it’s different from Cape Town.”
“I think it’s a good signing, but if they won’t complement him… It’s like saying you want to eat good food, but you don’t buy the ingredients, so it’s going to be difficult.”
The Missing Playmaker Gap
Khanye pointed to the creative void in Amakhosi’s midfield, particularly after the departure of Gaston Sirino, arguing that Chiefs currently lack a traditional maestro capable of controlling games and feeding final-third attackers:
“Who’s going to cook and dish for the boy? Do they have a proper number 10 at Kaizer Chiefs who can fetch the ball, rotate it, and drive the midfield? I mean a playmaker? They don’t have that type of player.”
“You have released [Gaston] Sirino, and not to say Sirino was great at Kaizer Chiefs, but he’s better compared to the players they have.”
Phili could make his official debut for Amakhosi this Sunday, 9 August, when Kaizer Chiefs host Golden Arrows in their MTN8 quarter-final clash at FNB Stadium (19:00 EAT / 18:00 SAST).
