Cheslin Kolbe has received an outpouring of support from his Springbok teammates and sporting friends after suffering another broken jaw in the dramatic victory over the All Blacks.
The Springboks secured a thrilling 29-24 win over New Zealand at FNB Stadium, but the victory came with a significant setback when Kolbe was forced from the field early in the contest.
The experienced back was brought into the fullback position after Damian Willemse’s injury, but his involvement lasted just nine minutes.
Kolbe suffered the injury while attempting to make a tackle on New Zealand loose forward Luke Jacobson, bringing his evening to a premature end.
Kolbe faces another difficult recovery
Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus later confirmed that Kolbe had suffered a broken jaw, ruling the double Rugby World Cup winner out of the upcoming Test against the All Blacks in Baltimore.
The injury could keep the 32-year-old out of action for several more weeks as he begins the rehabilitation process.
Unfortunately for Kolbe, the latest setback brings back difficult memories.
He suffered a similar jaw fracture in 2022 during the Springboks’ Test against Wales in Cape Town. That injury required surgery and resulted in a lengthy recovery of around eight weeks.
Springbok teammates send their support
Kolbe shared an update from his hospital bed on social media, thanking supporters and acknowledging the role of his family during the difficult period.
His Springbok teammates were quick to respond with messages of encouragement.
Damian de Allende wrote: “Love you boeta!” while Ox Nche sent his own message of support: “Speedy recovery Oompa.”
Trevor Nyakane also offered encouragement, writing: “Get well soon brother!”
Support extended beyond the Springbok camp, with UFC champion Dricus du Plessis describing Kolbe as “yster” and former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune wishing him a speedy recovery.
The messages underline the respect and affection Kolbe has earned across South African sport.
Will Kolbe return before the end of the year?
With several important Tests still ahead, attention will now turn to Kolbe’s rehabilitation and whether he can recover in time to play a role later in the season.
The Springboks are scheduled to face Australia in Perth on 27 September, followed by a demanding end-of-year campaign against Italy, France and Ireland.
Their Nations Championship fixtures are scheduled for November, with the finals weekend set for Twickenham later that month.
For now, though, the priority is Kolbe’s health and recovery.
After another unfortunate jaw injury, the Springboks will be hoping one of their most dynamic players can return to the field as soon as it is safe to do so.
