Percy Tau is reportedly keen on returning to South African football, but his salary expectations could become a major obstacle as he searches for a new club.
The former Bafana Bafana international is currently a free agent and is looking to revive his career after leaving football in Asia. However, the financial package he is prepared to accept could narrow his options in the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
Tau willing to accept R450,000 per month
During an interview with sports broadcaster Robert Marawa, Tau was asked whether he would consider a two-year contract worth R450,000 per month, with an option to extend.
The 32-year-old responded positively, saying: “Perfect, yes.”
His answer provides an indication of the salary package he would be willing to consider as he weighs up a possible return to the PSL.
Although Tau has expressed interest in playing in South Africa again, securing a suitable offer remains the key challenge.
Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns among possible destinations
Tau has previously been linked with Kaizer Chiefs, but he clarified that Amakhosi had never officially approached him.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns star also made it clear that he would be open to considering several PSL clubs.
He spoke positively about Sundowns, where he enjoyed success and built a strong connection with the club’s supporters. However, he suggested that he would consider joining Chiefs if they made an offer and Sundowns did not.
Tau also refused to rule out Orlando Pirates or Stellenbosch FC, emphasising that his decision would depend on the opportunities available.
His comments suggest that he is not limiting himself to one potential destination.
Could R450,000 put PSL clubs off?
A salary of R450,000 per month would represent a significant financial commitment for any PSL club, particularly over a two-year contract.
While clubs such as Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns may have greater financial resources than most local teams, they would still need to consider whether the investment makes sense.
At 32, Tau remains an experienced player with an impressive football background, including his time at Al Ahly and his contributions to Bafana Bafana. However, clubs are likely to assess his recent form, fitness and expected contribution before committing to a substantial salary.
Tau has insisted that he is reasonable when negotiating contracts and understands that clubs have financial limits.
Ultimately, his willingness to compromise could determine how quickly he finds a new team. A return to the PSL remains a possibility, but the question is whether a local club will be prepared to meet his reported salary expectations.
Should Percy Tau accept less than R450,000 per month to secure a PSL return? Which club would be the best fit for him?
