South Africa's Dr Thulani Ngwenya makes history as the first African medical official appointed up to the FIFA World Cup semi-finals as a Doping Control Officer.

South African football has scored a massive victory off the pitch. The South African Football Association (SAFA) Chief Medical Officer, Dr Thulani Ngwenya, is officially heading to the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America, where he will serve as a prestigious Doping Control Officer.

Handpicked by the FIFA Anti-Doping Unit (FADU), Dr Ngwenya will be stationed in Dallas, United States, from 7 June to 15 July. He will oversee critical In- and Out-of-Competition Anti-Doping Controls during the global showpiece.

A Historic Milestone for African Football

Dr Ngwenya’s appointment isn’t just a personal victory; it is a monumental moment for the entire continent.

“It is the first time ever in the history of football where we have an African going all the way to the semi-finals as a medical officer or a doping control officer. This is not something small and I am really honoured,” Ngwenya revealed.

Widely regarded as an international authority in sports medicine, Dr Ngwenya credited his rapid rise to the unyielding backing of SAFA’s leadership. Having joined the association in 2014 as a young professional, his career has seen a meteoric trajectory across COSAFA, CAF, and now firmly at the pinnacle of FIFA operations. He currently also holds the influential role of Vice President of the CAF Medical Commission.
