The popular Big Breakfast Show on Radio 2000, hosted by Sibusiso “DJ Sbu” Leope, Nathi Ndamase, and Lelo Mzaca, is currently facing an investigation by the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) following a listener complaint. The trio is accused of promoting personal religious and political views, thereby violating the principles of public broadcasting neutrality. Religious Bias Allegation The initial complaint filed with the BCCSA specifically targeted co-host Nathi Ndamase for regularly reading Bible verses on air. The listener argued that this practice shows bias toward Christianity and discriminates against other religions, which are not given an equal platform. The complaint stated: “South Africa has many religions, so one religion cannot be given preference over the others. It’s discrimination... Nathi must keep her religion to herself.” In response to the criticism, Ndamase firmly defended her actions and refused to apologize, stating: “I’m not going to apologise for reading scripture, for loving my God and sharing the Word.” Political Favoritism Accusation The controversy deepened with a separate allegation that DJ Sbu and Lelo Mzaca were showing favoritism towards the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. When DJ Sbu read this specific complaint on air, co-host Lelo Mzaca reportedly dismissed the claims and demanded concrete evidence. DJ Sbu maintained that the team is fully aware of their responsibilities as public broadcasters: “We know that we need to remain neutral on political views. I don’t remember an instance where we gave favour to one party over another. And we would never campaign for any political party, that would be irresponsible.” BCCSA Probe Underway The BCCSA has formally launched an investigation to assess whether the Big Breakfast Show team breached broadcasting regulations concerning neutrality and impartiality. The show continues to air on Radio 2000 while the official inquiry unfolds.
