Relebohile Mofokeng knows what it takes to make an impact at the highest level while still a teenager.
Now playing his football in Belgium with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, the Bafana Bafana star has identified another exciting young South African talent making his mark in the Betway Premiership.
Orlando Pirates winger Mpho Padime has caught Mofokeng’s attention after making several appearances for the reigning league champions this season.
Mofokeng impressed by Padime’s style
Padime, 19, has been introduced from the bench in recent matches against Marumo Gallants, Durban City and Kruger United.
Despite facing competition for places among Pirates’ attacking options, the teenager has taken his opportunities and showcased an attacking style that Mofokeng believes represents the best qualities of South African football.
Speaking to SuperSport, Mofokeng praised Padime’s ability to take on defenders and attack with purpose.
“I think he’s a very exciting player. He’s very exciting and very skilful,” Mofokeng said.
The Union SG attacker also highlighted Padime’s willingness to dribble, entertain and take responsibility when moving forward.
Mofokeng believes those qualities could take the young winger a long way if he continues to develop.
‘He’ll go far’
Mofokeng pointed to several aspects of Padime’s game that have impressed him, including the youngster’s height and work rate.
His assessment is particularly interesting given Mofokeng’s own rise from South African football to the European stage.
The 19-year-old Pirates attacker now has the opportunity to establish himself at one of the country’s biggest clubs, but consistent opportunities and continued development will be key to his progress.
For Pirates supporters, Padime’s emergence provides another reason to keep an eye on the club’s next generation.
Mofokeng making his own mark in Belgium
While keeping an eye on the next wave of South African talent, Mofokeng continues to build his own reputation in Europe.
The Bafana Bafana international scored the decisive penalty during Union SG’s shootout victory over Club Brugge in the Belgian Super Cup final in July.
He later opened his Europa League account with a goal in Union SG’s 3-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen.
Mofokeng has also scored three goals in five league appearances and provided an assist against Royal Antwerp.
Union SG have enjoyed an impressive run of form, winning their last six matches across all competitions.
Another South African youngster to watch
Mofokeng’s endorsement puts additional attention on Padime, but the teenager’s development will ultimately be determined by his performances on the pitch.
For now, the Pirates youngster is earning opportunities, while one of South Africa’s most exciting young exports believes he has the qualities to go a long way.
Could Mpho Padime become the next Orlando Pirates youngster to make a major breakthrough?
