Musician Big Zulu has launched a community-driven soccer tournament in his hometown of Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal, as a proactive measure to fight the alarming rise in youth alcohol and drug abuse.

The artist’s motivation stemmed from a recent and disheartening visit home, where he observed very young children engaged in substance use while others played football. This stark contrast led him to identify a critical gap: the absence of organized sports in rural areas.

“In our time, we used to play football while herding cattle… We didn’t have time to sit around being bored and thinking about doing the wrong things,” he reflected.

The Big Zulu Soccer Tournament is designed to fill this void, offering young people a positive and disciplined environment to spend their time.

Big Zulu secured crucial backing for the initiative, approaching local chiefs and the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club for assistance. He expressed gratitude to Kaizer Chiefs for their generous donation of equipment, including balls and bibs, which will help get the tournament off the ground.

Big Zulu Revives Community Sports to Tackle Youth Drug Crisis.

Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal—Concerned by the increasing prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse among the youth in his community, renowned artist Big Zulu has spearheaded a powerful solution: the Big Zulu Soccer Tournament.

The initiative is a direct response to what Zulu perceives as a root cause of substance use in rural areas: the decline of organized, engaging activities. “It’s because there is no longer a sport, no more football,” he stated, pointing out that historical activities like herding and playing kept young people occupied.

By providing this community-based football tournament, Big Zulu aims to instill discipline, create a healthy space, and ultimately divert young lives away from destructive habits. The venture has already received a significant boost from Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, who donated essential supplies like balls and bibs, showing major support for the artist’s vision.

Why Big Zulu Started a Soccer Tournament

A routine visit home to Bergville last week turned into a mission for Big Zulu. The sight of young children drinking and smoking near others playing football was a wake-up call, prompting him to launch a critical intervention.

Realizing the link between boredom and substance use, the artist concluded that the re-introduction of structured sports was key to safeguarding the youth. He took his idea—the Big Zulu Soccer Tournament—to local chiefs and successfully rallied support from the Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, securing much-needed equipment.

This personal reflection on the community’s need is now transforming into a tangible initiative, leveraging the joy of sports to foster positive change and combat the rising tide of drug abuse.
